Story: Inspired by Coffeyviller Mildred "Burke" Bliss
Champion Wrestler and Three-Time World Champion
What kind of energy does it take to revolutionize an entire sport? For Mildred Bliss, it was energy rooted in Coffeyville, Kansas. Born in Coffeyville in 1915, Mildred was gifted with remarkable wrestling skills. While only a teenager, she was walloping men in the ring at Kansas carnivals. Attempts by many—including her own trainer—to dissuade her from her professional wrestling dream were unsuccessful. Mildred's vitality and passion for the sport could not be contained. Her fame soon spread nationwide as she achieved a staggering 199-1 record in the ring.
In the 1950s, Mildred found herself shunned by professional wrestling groups, which at the time recognized only male wrestlers. But Mildred was not discouraged. She responded by founding the World Women's Wrestling Association as well as a female wrestling school. In 2016, she was subsequently inducted into the World Wrestling Hall of Fame.
